Collections Intern

The Gage County Historical Society and museum is hiring a summer curator intern, with a flexible schedule 24 hours a week. This internship is geared toward college students or recent graduates. This position is for 288 hours of work at $12 per hour.   

This internship is in connection with our Big Give Gage 2023 project “Every Photo Tells a Story.” The Intern will work with the Executive Director to ensure museum collections are properly documented and cared for. The main component of this job will be to scan over 6000 photo glass plates and photo negatives. Applicants should be comfortable handling 35 mm negatives and glass slides with the appropriate museum care and storage. Other job duties include cataloging the slides and negatives as well as indexing the collection.

This position requires attention to detail and the ability to work independently. Training will be offered the first two days of work. Applicants must be reliable and self-motivated with effective communication skills and organizational skills. Coursework or previous experience in museums, record management, or library science is preferred. Proficient computer skills and creativity are a plus. 

This is a temporary position and therefore no benefits with the job.

Special Events Internship

The Gage County Historical Society and Museum is hiring a summer event assistant intern, with a flexible schedule 20 hours a week with additional hours on event weeks. This internship is geared toward college students or recent graduates. This position is for 240 hours of work at $12 an hour.

The Special Events Internship will begin in May and last for fourteen weeks, ending in early August to coincide with the height of our rental program, public programs, and summer events.

The Special Events Intern will assist the Executive Director in the preparation and carrying out of our summer event 150th Anniversary of Filley Stone Barn July 13th and 14th, at this event the intern will assist in a variety of tasks such as church fan preparation, registration of performers, setting up and strike of the venue space, and setup and maintaining the gift shop table as well as various other tasks at the event. The intern will also assist with our Members Only Sneak Peak event, Summer Speaker Series, and Homestead Days programs at the Museum. The intern will prepare, set up, and implement our new program for the museum “Escape from the Museum”. The intern will also learn how to book and manage our rental programs at the museum or the Filley Stone Barn.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Ability to work independently.
  • A positive attitude and flexibility in an ever-changing environment
  • Pursuing a degree in history, event planning, or related field of study
  • Flexible, highly responsible, articulate, self-motivated.
  • Working knowledge of MS Word and Excel
  • Candidates must have a car and be willing to work additional hours on nights and weekends for special events.
  • Ability to lift 40 lbs. and use step ladders.
